An unusual vintage safety-pin brooch centred with a small oval cameo-style portrait medallion.

The elongated silver-tone pin is formed with elegant curled terminals and a simple functional fastening, giving the piece the character of an antique shawl or kilt pin. At its centre sits an oval profile portrait in pale relief, dramatically contrasted against a beautifully mottled ground of soft green, ochre and earthy brown.

The miniature portrait has a distinctly Renaissance or Classical character, recalling the historic figures and antiquarian subjects that became fashionable in nineteenth-century Grand Tour jewellery.

The simplicity of the elongated metal pin provides an appealing contrast to the finely detailed central portrait, creating a piece that feels both historical and unexpectedly contemporary.

Good vintage condition with visible age-related patina.

The metal shows surface scratching, oxidation and tonal variation consistent with age and use. The central medallion also displays age-related surface variation and discolouration, particularly around the perimeter and background.

The pin mechanism is complete and functional.
