Vintage 80s-90s Burgundy Velvet Floral Slouchy Bucket Hat - Donna Karan

A striking vintage Donna Karan New York hat dating to the late 1980s or very early 1990s, crafted in richly textured burgundy velvet with a softly structured, slouching crown and deep rounded brim.

The front is finished with an extravagant cluster of layered fabric flowers, giving the piece a distinctly romantic, almost Victorian-revival character. The deep wine and aubergine tones shift subtly with the light, emphasising the crushed velvet surface and sculptural construction.

The silhouette sits somewhere between a soft bucket hat and an exaggerated cloche, with its relaxed crown designed to collapse and drape rather than hold a rigid shape. This kind of romantic millinery feels particularly characteristic of fashion around 1989–1992, when velvet, historicist references and dramatic accessories returned strongly to designer collections.

Donna Karan’s Fall 1989 collection notably included burgundy velvet evening pieces, while surviving archival Donna Karan hats from the period also show the designer’s use of velvet and oversized floral decoration.
