This vintage Hermès “Ludovicus Magnus” 90 cm silk scarf is a baroque tribute to Louis XIV, the Sun King. Designed by Françoise de La Perrière, the carré takes its Latin title Ludovicus Magnus (“Louis the Great”) and places the monarch at the centre, riding a powerful white horse in full ceremonial dress.

The composition is framed by trompe-l’oeil gilded scrollwork, heraldic emblems, trumpets and crossed swords, all set against a luminous golden-yellow and white palette that recalls Versailles’ gilded interiors. It’s a design that sits perfectly within Hermès’ equestrian heritage: the royal rider, the haute-école posture of the horse and the finely rendered tack all echo the house’s origins as a Parisian harness and saddle maker.

Crafted from 100% silk twill with hand-rolled edges, this scarf is in very good vintage condition, with light signs of wear typical of age (minor creasing / small imperfections visible only on close inspection and reflected in the price). Beautiful tied at the neck, folded as a headscarf or framed as art, Ludovicus Magnus is a striking choice for lovers of historical Hermès carrés, French royalty and warm yellow tones.
