A charming pair of vintage equestrian cufflinks featuring a cropped miniature-style image of

The image on the cufflinks is a cropped reproduction of the Portrait by Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Gaspar de Guzmán, conde-duque de Olivares, a caballo, usually called in English Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, on Horseback or Equestrian Portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares. The original painting is a Spanish Baroque oil on canvas from about 1636. It is in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.

The cufflink image reproduces the central horse-and-rider group from Velázquez’s painting: the rider turns back toward the viewer from a low, commanding viewpoint; the horse’s body sweeps diagonally across the foreground; the rider wears armour with a red sash and holds the baton of command; and the dark battlefield/background masses behind the rider correspond to the same forms in the Prado painting. The oval cufflink format is a jewelry crop, not the original format of the painting.

The picture is set beneath a glossy domed cover and framed in warm gold-tone metal. The softly painterly scene gives them a romantic, classical feel, perfect for lovers of horses, countryside style and traditional men’s accessories.

Elegant with a touch of character, these cufflinks would work beautifully with a crisp white shirt, tweed jacket, velvet blazer or formal tailoring. Their equestrian theme makes them a thoughtful gift for a horse lover, racing enthusiast or collector of vintage cufflinks.
