A wonderfully characterful vintage sweetheart brooch, formed as an elongated safety pin with a sculpted bow and articulated heart-shaped orange cabochon charm.

The bow is particularly attractive on closer inspection. Rather than being stone-set, its surface is sculpted with numerous small faceted or diamond-cut impressions, producing a sparkling effect as the metal catches the light. The same decorative treatment continues around the heart setting, giving the piece the appearance of jewelled work without applied stones.

Suspended freely beneath the bow is a warm orange heart-shaped cabochon in a scalloped, textured setting. The heart has a rich opaque-to-softly translucent appearance. Its precise material has not been tested, so we would describe it conservatively as an orange cabochon rather than attributing it to amber, resin or another material.

The combination of bow, heart and safety-pin construction gives the brooch the romantic character associated with sweetheart jewellery, while its long linear profile makes it an unusual decorative piece for a lapel, scarf, knitwear or jacket.

Based on its construction and styling, we would tentatively date it to approximately the 1930s–1940s, although an earlier or somewhat later date cannot be completely excluded without identifying marks.

Vintage condition with visible age-related wear. The faux pearls retain an attractive lustre but show some discolouration, surface marks and wear around a number of the drilled or mounted ends. The reverse metal plate has extensive tarnishing, oxidation and surface loss consistent with age.

The pin and clasp are complete.
