A sculptural vintage black pleated scarf or stole, attributed to Issey Miyake, distinguished by exceptionally fine, permanent engineered pleating and a fluid architectural construction.

The fabric is worked into dense, closely spaced vertical pleats that expand and contract with movement while returning to their original form — a textile language strongly associated with Issey Miyake’s pioneering pleated garments and accessories. The scarf can be worn loosely, wrapped close to the neck or manipulated into more sculptural shapes, allowing the pleats themselves to create volume rather than relying on conventional tailoring.

Although the original brand and composition labels are no longer present, the construction is highly consistent with vintage Miyake pleated accessories. Importantly, Issey Miyake produced pleated garments well beyond the separately labelled Pleats Please line; vintage main-line Issey Miyake pieces can employ the same type of technically engineered pleating. Contemporary Issey Miyake scarves continue this approach, with permanent pleated structures designed to fold compactly and expand when worn.

This piece was acquired alongside other vintage Issey Miyake garments but lost its label after we acquired it, and is therefore offered as attributed to Issey Miyake, as a documented labelled piece.

The result is a remarkably minimal object: essentially a single plane of black fabric transformed through pleating into something architectural, tactile and highly expressive.

Excellent vintage condition overall, with the permanent pleating remaining strong and well defined. Please note a narrow opening in the fabric, is a slit, as shown in the photos. The original designer and composition labels are no longer present. Please refer closely to all photographs for condition.
