An unusual vintage sterling silver and abalone shell pendant necklace, designed as a miniature horn-shaped container with a hinged decorative lid.

The elongated pendant has a gently twisted, tapering form, with naturally iridescent shell displaying flashes of green, blue, gold and pearl. Ornate silver mounts frame the upper section, finished with scrollwork and a hinged cap that opens to reveal the small hollow interior.

Wearable scent and toiletry vessels have a long history, particularly in the form of miniature perfume flasks and vinaigrettes. This piece appears to be a later interpretation of that tradition and may originally have been intended to hold perfume, scented balm, snuff or another small personal preparation. Similar mother-of-pearl scent-flask pendants are found in early- and mid-20th-century jewellery.

Its curved horn form also gives it the character of a traditional cornicello or talismanic horn pendant, while the nacreous shell makes every angle slightly different as it catches the light.

Suspended from a fine silver-coloured chain, this is both a piece of jewellery and a small decorative object — particularly appealing to collectors of vintage silver jewellery, scent bottles, perfume pendants, mother-of-pearl accessories and unusual talismanic jewellery.

Good vintage condition with surface wear, patina and tarnishing to the silver consistent with age. The shell shows natural colour variation and small surface marks. The hinged lid opens correctly and the pendant retains its hollow interior. Some oxidation and darkening are visible inside the cap and container.
